CHAPTER SIX

Makeup off and teeth brushed, I entered the room and stared at the quilt-covered bed in longing. It’d been an amazing day, but a very, very long one.

After I’d finished the dishes, we’d turned on the TV to watch part of a Christmas movie while we all drank our hot chocolate. But Jamie had barely made it past the two inches of marshmallows on top before he’d passed out against my shoulder with a white mustache and his mouth hanging open.

Apparently, even a healthy, rambunctious kid couldn’t withstand the hard crash of a day full of travel, laughs, and sugar.

After I’d snapped a picture to embarrass him with when he was older, Garrett had woken him just enough to shuffle upstairs and run a toothbrush over his teeth while I’d put our mugs away. I doubted the kid had put much effort into it, but I’d just have him brush extra well in the morning.

Jeanie had meandered off to bed not long after that, quickly followed by the departure of Sarah and Harry who were staying at a bed and breakfast in town.

They’d claimed they needed to get to bed to recover from the “time change,” but given the amount of food and alcohol they’d both consumed throughout the day, I had a feeling that wasn’t what they needed to recover from.

I shifted closer to the bed, my body all but begging me to fall onto the mound of pillows and not move for ten hours. But my mind, the overworking bitch that it was, just cackled and yelled, “Good luck!”

Because Garrett and I were about to be alone for the first time all day.

I fidgeted in the center of the room, listening to the sound of him brushing his teeth across the hall. I pressed a hand to my chest, feeling the impression of the ring against the underside of my breast. After already being caught with it once, I hadn’t risked moving it since I’d hastily stuffed it in there.

But if I wanted to propose to Garrett on this trip, right now was the time to do it. Because I absolutely refused to do it tomorrow. Proposing on Christmas was a little too cliché, even for me.

I dropped my hand, my stomach flipping all over again. Why was this so terrifying? How did men do this all the time? How did they pull out a ring, confident their partner would say yes, even while part of them still worried they’d say no at the same time?

The bathroom cracked open behind me, and I stole a peek at Garrett over my shoulder, watching the muscles in his arms shift as he rubbed the back of his neck and walked into the room. The hair framing his face was damp, and his dress shirt was unbuttoned, hanging loosely over his jeans and gifting me with the sight of his bare chest.

Goddamn, my boyfriend was fucking gorgeous.

His eyes darkened as he caught me staring at his naked skin. Reaching behind him, he eased the door shut, blindly feeling for the lock and twisting it.
